Hello, my name is Debra Akers from Ashland,Ohio.

The arts have been an important part of my life thanks to my mother and father.  My father, a commercial artist, and my mother, a gifted musician, instilled the values to appreciate the beauty of art because of it being so pleasurable to one's self worth.  I then applied that philosophy to performing arts in theater and as a classical vocal artist.

Now, an extension of my artistic endeavors continues to an area unlike I've ever experienced to that of working with clay.

The combination of simple elements and mixtures of earthly components, when integrated with heat, has  produced an art form both functional for man and an art form to adorn.

In music there are lines of movement called phrasing.  With pottery, the clay, rotations of the wheel and the hands form with the movement a bowl of vase.

Just as important in music is COLOR that one might sense when hearing a certain symphony due to the orchestration or color in the solo voice.  This is so true when coloring or glazing.  All my glazes are mixed in the studio to produce a vibrancy that will enhance each vessel that I make.  One must know that glazes can be toxic!

The simplicity and grandeur, with an emphasis of nature, is a common theme for Chinese art. I have had a fascination for this style and that of ornamental lidded jars.  I have incorporated geodes to represent the importance of Nature which becomes the focal point of style and represents nature.  The remaining vessel depicts the simplicity of man.

My ceramics has been displayed in student and juried shows at Ashland University, as well as the OHIO ARTS MEDIA COMPETITION held at the Coburn Art Gallery on the campus of Ashland University where I have studied  ceramics with my instructor, Larry Schiemann. One of my teapots is currently at the teapot museum in Sparta, North Carolina.

My work is also represented at the Art 101 Gallery in Ashland, Ohio and  Eye Candy Gallery in the Tremont neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio.

Now, I am proud to announce that I have become a member of the team of artists at Mac Worthington's Galerie.
